    Club Accord June 2002 Newsletter

Our original guest, Johnny Lee Leslie was unable to keep the engagement and we had to seek an alternative, and were, at short notice able to engage John Leslie (Accordions of London) who also brought  with him Andy Anderson and a young Eddie Jay, all Accordionists.

Nancy opened the evening playing various melodies to help create a musical atmosphere Andy Anderson took the stage and commenced with "Lady of Spain" followed with "After You've Gone", "Under Paris Skies", and finished with one of his special tangos. Eddie Jay then treated us to a selection of Country Scottish dances followed by "Tico Tico" and a real "Beatrice", accompanied by our Graham on his drums. John Leslie with his splendid Guilietti and echo unit commenced with "Just Jack", "Maria Elenair", "Blue Moon", the "Cuckoo Waltz", "I Love Paris in the Springtime", "Lullaby of Leaves", "Mauvieena", Pill Alley", "Moon River", "True Hussar", "Charade", "September Song", and "Besume Moucho", ending with a few Musettes.

During the interval before the raffle, our Andy played a selection of  Scottish dance tunes, followed by Erica with some pretty Chinese Melodies, followed by  Neil who played some attractive Scottish music; with very deft finger work! ably accompanied by Graham. Charles (our youngest member) had not brought his accordion, but John Leslie encouraged him to play on his accordion and accompanied him on Andy's accordion, a much appreciated gesture. At John's invitation Nancy went on stage and played "Cavatina", the George Formby selection, "Fascinating Rhythm" and "Mood Indigo", accompanied by Graham.

Andy Anderson opened the second half with, "Please don't talk about me", "Honeysuckle Rose", "Mr. Shane", then a personal composition as a tribute to his late Grandmother, ending with tango "Nanette" and "Montaine", also a special request "Spanish Eyes".  Eddie then played "Misty", "Anniversary Waltz", and further waltzes, finishing with "Sheebeg and Sheemore", once again accompanied by Graham.  John Leslie drew the evening to a close with the following selection; "Sway", "Sunnyside of the Street", "Marie Beach", "Hirondells", Polish music including "Soldiers March" which he dedicated to our late member Jan, and here he paused to say a few kind words to Barbara, continuing with "La Mode", "Fiddler on the Roof", "Wine Women and Song", "Autumn Leaves", "Danny Boy" (unusual arrangement), "Return Ole", "Kagaischock", "Quando", "Under the Bridges of Paris" and "Poppa Piccalino" and a few requests.

The whole evening turned out to be relaxing, with a feast of good music enjoyed by all. Attendance was poor for a guest night but we are in the holiday season. There were some new faces, including five members of the Leominster Accordion Club!
